Key Expat Tax Services Tax Terms, Defined

T1135
The foreign income verification statement Canadian residents file once specified foreign property passes $100,000 of cost at any time in the year (CRA, 2025 tax year).
Tax Treaty
The bilateral agreement that allocates taxing rights between two countries and relieves double taxation.
Withholding Tax
Tax deducted at source on cross-border payments — Canada's 25% Part XIII rate is often reduced by treaty.
Expat Tax Services: Our Analysis

Each expat year is a residency fact pattern: arrival and departure dates, ties kept and cut, and the elections that soften part-year taxation.

Non-residents earning Canadian rental income face 25% withholding on gross rent unless a Section 216 return (with an NR6 undertaking) moves them to net-income taxation — usually a dramatic difference. Engagements are quoted as a fixed fee for a defined scope, and reviews of prior-year filings are included where earlier positions affect the current one.

Expat Tax Services — published fixed fees

Canadian return with foreign income

From $349fixed, before work starts

Covers: The Canadian return with foreign income, foreign tax credits computed by category and country, and the foreign property reporting that usually accompanies them.

What moves it up: The number of countries. One foreign employer is a straightforward credit; income and tax from three countries means three separate credit computations with their own limits.

See this fee page

Departure (emigration) return

From $349fixed, before work starts

Covers: The departure-year return with the deemed disposition computed, the property listing filed, and any election to defer payment against security prepared alongside.

What moves it up: Private holdings. A listed portfolio values itself; private company shares, foreign real estate and crypto need defensible valuations as at the departure day.

Expat Tax Services Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Expat Tax Services cost in Canada?

Expat Tax Services starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you review the deliverable with us before it is filed. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Expat Tax Services?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the first call to our 24-hour helpline.

How long does Expat Tax Services take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit support works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months (CRA, 2025 tax year). Interest is what compounds, daily, on top. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Expat Tax Services?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Expat Tax Services different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you told it about. It does not ask whether a treaty caps the withholding on that payment, whether the foreign credit was claimed in the right country, whether an information return was due on an account that earned nothing, or whether your related-party pricing is documented. Those are the questions that move the number on a cross-border file.

What is included in Expat Tax Services services?

Our expat tax services services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Expat Tax Services services?

You can start by calling our 24-hour helpline on +1 (416) 619-0068 or sending the form. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Can I contribute to an IRA on income I excluded?

No, and this is a real cost of the exclusion. A contribution needs taxable compensation, and income excluded under Form 2555 is not taxable compensation — so an American abroad who excludes their whole salary can have no contribution room at all, traditional or Roth. Someone who instead claims the foreign tax credit keeps the income in the base and keeps the room. It is one of several reasons to model both routes rather than default to the exclusion. See exclusion against credit.

Can I revoke the foreign earned income exclusion, and what happens if I do?

You can stop claiming it, but a revocation is not a free toggle: having revoked, you are locked out of electing it again for a period of years unless the IRS consents to an earlier return. That is why switching from the exclusion to the credit is a modelled decision — it can be right, particularly where local tax is high or where you need earned income for retirement contributions or the refundable child credit, but it should be made once and deliberately. See exclusion against credit.

Cross-border situations we are engaged for

Case study 1

A Family Trust Abroad With Reporting on Both Sides

A trust settled in one country and a beneficiary living in another produces reporting for the trust, the settlor and the beneficiary, on different forms and different dates. The engagement maps who files what before anything is prepared.

Case study 2

A Home Kept in Canada After the Move Abroad

A dwelling left available is the tie the CRA weighs most heavily, and its treatment differs depending on whether it is rented at arm's length. The file settles the residence position first and the rental reporting second.

Read how this one runs
Case study 3

Wintering in the US Long Enough to Become a US Filer

Days in the United States accumulate across three years, and enough of them make you a US resident for tax regardless of immigration status. The file counts the days properly and files the statement that keeps the position closer connection rather than residence.

Read how this one runs
Case study 4

Leaving Canada — the Bill You Get for Assets You Still Own

Emigrating triggers a deemed disposition of most holdings, which produces tax on gains never realised in cash. The file values the property, identifies what is excluded, and looks at whether security can be posted rather than the tax paid outright.

Read how this one runs
Case study 5

Catching Up From Inside the United States

The domestic route suits a filer who was resident in the US through the missed years, and it differs from the offshore one in what it asks for and what it costs. Choosing between them before anything is filed is the whole engagement.

Read how this one runs
Case study 6

A US LLC Owned From Canada

The two countries classify the vehicle differently, so relief that ought to apply frequently does not and the same profit can be taxed in both hands. The engagement examines whether the structure can be changed and what the change itself costs.

Read how this one runs
Case study 7

A Company Abroad Owned by a US Person

A business incorporated where the owner lives is a foreign corporation to the IRS, with a reporting package of its own and schedules that need local accounts restated. Classification comes first, because it decides what is reportable and when profits are taxed.

Case study 8

A Trust Abroad With a Canadian Connection

Contributions or beneficiaries in Canada can bring a foreign trust inside the Canadian net entirely. The analysis is who contributed what and when, because the answer decides whether the trust files here at all.

Core International & Cross-Border Tax Services

International Tax Planning & Advisory

Strategy and compliance for income, assets and families spread across borders.

One coordinating team: filings on every side of the border are sequenced so treaty relief and foreign tax credits are claimed once — and in the right country.

U.S. & Cross-Border Tax Returns

Dual filers: U.S. citizens in Canada and Canadians with U.S. income run two parallel systems — we prepare both, in the right order, every year.

Expat & Emigration Tax

The move year is its own project: the elections and valuations filed that year decide the next decade of both countries’ returns.

Non-Resident Canadian Tax

Default withholding is 25% of gross: elective returns routinely turn over-withheld rent and pensions into refunds.

Transfer Pricing & BEPS

Documentation prepared with the return is the cheapest insurance in international tax; reconstructing it during an audit is the most expensive.

Cross-Border Estates & Trusts

Wills drafted for one country routinely misfire in the other — deemed disposition here, estate tax there, credits in between.

Cross-Border Corporate Tax

Expansion raises the same four questions every time — entity, PE, repatriation, payroll. We answer them before the tax authorities do.

India Tax for NRIs & Returning Residents

The deduction is taken on the sale price, not the gain — which is why an NRI property sale strands cash unless the certificate is applied for before closing.

Canadian Tax with a Foreign Element

Residency is decided on facts, not on a form — and the year you arrive or leave is the one where the largest amounts turn on the smallest details.

UAE Tax for Expats & Their Home Country

A zero-tax country is only half the answer — the question that decides the bill is whether the country you came from still treats you as resident.

Technology & SaaS

Software revenue crosses borders by default — sourcing rules, withholding on licence-like payments and IP location decide the effective rate.

Software revenue is rarely taxed where the team sits. Licence, subscription and service income are characterised differently by each side, and the answer decides withholding at source, treaty relief and whether a foreign customer creates a taxable presence at all — questions that are cheap to settle before the contract and expensive afterwards.
