In short

For individual competitors the performance article reaches prize money and appearance fees in each country played, and expenses are often deductible only through a return that most players never file.

Below: the rule, what clients ask first, two worked files with their numbers, the process end to end, and the published fee.

The rule that applies to this group and not the one next to it

For individual competitors the performance article reaches prize money and appearance fees in each country played, and expenses are often deductible only through a return that most players never file.

Start with the mechanism, not the form. That is the practical value of a specialist here: not better arithmetic, but knowing which of several possible rules governs individual athletes — tennis, golf before the return is built on the wrong one.

Individual athletes — tennis, golf tax — priced before we start

A tennis or golf player's fee is set by the season: how many countries you competed in and how many of those took withholding from prize money at gross. A short calendar in one or two countries is one engagement; a full tour year, each event needing its own return to bring coaching and travel costs into account, is another.

Three things we hear on the first call

  • Tournament withholding is taken at gross before my expenses.
  • I compete in twenty countries and file in one.
  • My coaching and travel costs are never taken into account anywhere.

If any of that sounds familiar, it is because it is the standard experience of anyone in this position. The rules were not written to be read together, and nobody is given a map. See also green card holder living in Canada.

The arithmetic, worked through

It is easier to see with numbers attached.

Gross withholding against a net-basis return

A non-resident receives C$56,000 in the year. Assume withholding at 16% on the gross amount, and assume deductible costs of C$31,920 against it.

Gross withholding against a net-basis return
ItemAmount
Gross amount receivedC$56,000
Withheld at source (assumed 16% of gross)C$8,960
Deductible costsC$31,920
Net amount actually earnedC$24,080
Tax on the net amount (assumed graduated result)C$7,465
Difference recoverable by filingC$1,495

Filing on a net basis recovers C$1,495 of the C$8,960 withheld. That difference is the entire reason the elective return exists, and it is lost by not filing. That is an illustration of the mechanism, not a prediction about your file — the same computation on your figures is the first thing we do.

The figures here are an illustration, not an engagement: amounts are picked so the mechanism is easy to follow, and every rate or threshold is an assumption of the example. Before anything is filed for you, each one is confirmed with the issuing authority for your own tax year.

A worked example

Worked through with figures, the mechanism looks like this.

Credit relief on one stream of income

Take C$126,000 of income taxed in both countries. Assume the other country charged 23% on it and the home country would charge 43% on the same amount.

Credit relief on one stream of income
ItemAmount
Income taxed in both countriesC$126,000
Tax paid abroad (assumed 23%)C$28,980
Home tax on the same income (assumed 43%)C$54,180
Credit available (lesser of the two)C$28,980
Home tax still payableC$25,200

The credit absorbs C$28,980 and leaves C$25,200 payable at home, because the home rate on this income is the higher of the two. The balance is real cash and it is due on the home timetable, which is why instalments get raised in the first meeting. The interesting question is where your own figures fall relative to that, which is a computation rather than an opinion.

Example figures throughout, selected to make the rule visible, with rates and thresholds assumed for the demonstration. Your actual filing uses figures confirmed with the issuing authority for your tax year.

How we handle it

  1. 1We start with the chronology: dates, countries, and what has already been filed
  2. 2You get the scope and the fee in writing before we touch anything
  3. 3The work is prepared and reviewed by a named person, not a queue
  4. 4Nothing is filed until you have read it
  • Authorisation with each authority, so we see the assessments and slips directly rather than asking you for them.
  • Nothing is filed until you have read it.
  • Every statutory figure in your file is verified for your own year at source.

Your next step

Unilateral relief
Relief for foreign tax given by domestic law where no treaty applies. It is usually narrower than treaty relief and is the fallback in a non-treaty corridor.
Form 8865
The US information return for an interest in a foreign partnership, including contributions and dispositions.
Certificate of residency
A document from a tax authority confirming residence for a period, required by a foreign payer or authority before it will apply a treaty rate.
Forced heirship
Rules in some legal systems reserving part of an estate for particular heirs, which can override a will drafted elsewhere.

The published fees closest to individual athletes — tennis, golf tax

The fees published lower down cover single items rather than a season. Which of them apply depends on what sits beside the prize money: an appearance fee is tied to the event, endorsement income is not, and a sponsorship paid from a third country has to be sourced before either authority can be told what belongs to it.

Why clients bring individual athletes — tennis, golf tax to us

The reporting penalties get named early

The heaviest exposure on a cross-border file is usually a disclosure form, not the tax. We identify which ones apply before a deadline turns into a penalty.

The quote comes from your documents

Nothing is priced from a phone call. We read what you have first, then the fee is set — so the scope and the number are agreed on the same evidence.

The order of filing is planned, not improvised

Which return goes first decides whether relief can be claimed at all. That sequence is worked out before anything is submitted.

Wintering in the US Long Enough to Become a US Filer

Days in the United States accumulate across three years, and enough of them make you a US resident for tax regardless of immigration status. The file counts the days properly and files the statement that keeps the position closer connection rather than residence.

Case study 5

A US Filer Married to Someone Outside the System

Electing to treat a non-resident spouse as a US filer buys joint rates and brings that spouse's worldwide income and foreign accounts into the return. The election is easy to make and hard to revoke, so both positions are modelled first.

Core International & Cross-Border Tax Services

International Tax Planning & Advisory

Strategy and compliance for income, assets and families spread across borders.

One coordinating team: filings on every side of the border are sequenced so treaty relief and foreign tax credits are claimed once — and in the right country.

U.S. & Cross-Border Tax Returns

Dual filers: U.S. citizens in Canada and Canadians with U.S. income run two parallel systems — we prepare both, in the right order, every year.

Expat & Emigration Tax

The move year is its own project: the elections and valuations filed that year decide the next decade of both countries’ returns.

Non-Resident Canadian Tax

Default withholding is 25% of gross: elective returns routinely turn over-withheld rent and pensions into refunds.

Transfer Pricing & BEPS

Documentation prepared with the return is the cheapest insurance in international tax; reconstructing it during an audit is the most expensive.

Cross-Border Estates & Trusts

Wills drafted for one country routinely misfire in the other — deemed disposition here, estate tax there, credits in between.

Cross-Border Corporate Tax

Expansion raises the same four questions every time — entity, PE, repatriation, payroll. We answer them before the tax authorities do.

India Tax for NRIs & Returning Residents

The deduction is taken on the sale price, not the gain — which is why an NRI property sale strands cash unless the certificate is applied for before closing.

Canadian Tax with a Foreign Element

Residency is decided on facts, not on a form — and the year you arrive or leave is the one where the largest amounts turn on the smallest details.

UAE Tax for Expats & Their Home Country

A zero-tax country is only half the answer — the question that decides the bill is whether the country you came from still treats you as resident.

Tax for individual athletes — tennis, golf — questions we are asked

What makes individual athletes — tennis, golf different from an ordinary filing?

For individual competitors the performance article reaches prize money and appearance fees in each country played, and expenses are often deductible only through a return that most players never file. An ordinary preparer applies the general rule and stops there, which is how the relief in the specific provision goes unclaimed.

Can you work with my existing accountant?

That is how most of these engagements run. They keep the domestic file, we take the cross-border piece, and the boundary is agreed in writing so nothing is done twice or missed.

Is the sale of foreign property taxable where I live?

For a resident, yes — worldwide gains are taxable, and the gain is computed in your own currency, so the exchange rate at purchase and at sale changes the number even when the local-currency price did not move. The country where the property sits usually taxes it too, often with a withholding or clearance step before closing, and that tax becomes a credit. A principal residence relief may apply to a home abroad on the same terms as one at home. See principal residence and foreign property.

What is double tax relief and how is it given?

Three mechanisms, and which one you get depends on your residence country's law and the treaty. Exemption leaves the foreign income out of the residence-country base. Credit taxes it and then subtracts the foreign tax, capped at the residence-country tax on that income. Deduction merely reduces taxable income by the foreign tax, and is usually the weakest. Canada and the United States lead with credit; several treaties give exemption for specific income types. See claiming the credit.

Will this trigger an audit?

Filing correctly does not create risk; a pattern of missing filings does. Where a disclosure route is involved we set out what the authority will see and in what order before you commit to it.

What if I disagree with the position you recommend?

We set out the alternatives with their exposure and let you choose. Where a position is defensible but aggressive we say so in writing rather than filing it quietly.
