In short

School packages are built around benefits rather than salary, and where the employer is a non-profit or a foreign government-linked entity, additional exemption articles may apply that a standard payroll ignores.

On this page: the rule that applies here, the questions we are asked first, two finished files with their numbers, how an engagement runs, and the fee it starts from.

The rule that applies to this group and not the one next to it

School packages are built around benefits rather than salary, and where the employer is a non-profit or a foreign government-linked entity, additional exemption articles may apply that a standard payroll ignores.

Read this first; the rest is procedure. Two people with identical incomes and identical passports can owe completely different amounts because one of them falls inside a provision the other does not. That is the whole reason this page exists as its own page rather than as a paragraph on a general one.

International school staff tax — priced before we start

For international school staff the work is priced on the package, not the salary: housing, tuition for children, flights and shipping each have to be characterised in both countries, and an exemption article may turn on who the employer is. A single straightforward contract is a different job from several renewals across schools.

Three things we hear on the first call

  • Half my package is benefits and I do not know which parts are taxable.
  • The school withholds local tax and my home country wants a return anyway.
  • I renewed my contract and my exemption period appears to have quietly ended.

If any of that sounds familiar, it is because it is the standard experience of anyone in this position. The rules were not written to be read together, and nobody is given a map. See also Canadian snowbird — the substantial presence test.

The arithmetic, worked through

It is easier to see with numbers attached.

Splitting one salary between two countries

A salary of C$219,000 for a year with 211 working days, 98 of them performed in the other country. Employment income is generally sourced to where the work was physically done.

Splitting one salary between two countries
ItemAmount
Annual salaryC$219,000
Working days in the year211
Days worked in the other country98
Days worked at home113
Income sourced to the other countryC$101,716
Income sourced at homeC$117,284

C$101,716 is sourced abroad on this split, which is the figure the host country taxes and the figure the home credit is computed on. Reproduce this from a travel record, not from memory — it is the first thing an auditor asks for. We run this on your actual numbers before advising anything, because the conclusion can invert with a modest change in inputs.

These amounts illustrate the mechanism only. The rates and thresholds are assumptions of the example, not your numbers: each is checked against the issuing authority for your specific tax year before any return is filed.

What this looks like with numbers

It is easier to see with numbers attached.

Credit relief on one stream of income

Take C$131,000 of income taxed in both countries. Assume the other country charged 19% on it and the home country would charge 37% on the same amount.

Credit relief on one stream of income
ItemAmount
Income taxed in both countriesC$131,000
Tax paid abroad (assumed 19%)C$24,890
Home tax on the same income (assumed 37%)C$48,470
Credit available (lesser of the two)C$24,890
Home tax still payableC$23,580

The credit absorbs C$24,890 and leaves C$23,580 payable at home, because the home rate on this income is the higher of the two. The balance is real cash and it is due on the home timetable, which is why instalments get raised in the first meeting. Change any one of those inputs and the answer moves, which is why we run it on your own figures rather than on an illustration.

These amounts illustrate the mechanism only. The rates and thresholds are assumptions of the example, not your numbers: each is checked against the issuing authority for your specific tax year before any return is filed.

International tax accountant, in practice

If you came here for international tax accountant, this is where it is dealt with. The subject is cross-border tax for international school staff, and the page covers who it reaches, what then has to be filed, and what we charge to do the work.

From first contact to filed return

  1. Documents first, questions second

We read the file before asking anything, so the questions we do ask are the ones that matter.

  2. A quote you can hold us to

Fixed in writing against a defined scope. No hourly meter, and no revision after the fact.

  3. The order of filing decided deliberately

Which return goes first can decide whether relief is available at all. That is planned, not discovered.

  4. Nothing filed without your sign-off

You see the completed work, ask what you need to, and approve it before submission.

Four terms worth pinning down

Tax residency
The connection that gives a country the right to tax your worldwide income. It is decided by facts — where you live, where your family is, where your home is — not by citizenship or by the address on your post.
Presumptive taxation
An Indian scheme deeming profit as a percentage of turnover instead of computing it from books, with eligibility conditions and multi-year consequences.
Permanent establishment
The threshold at which a foreign enterprise's business profits become taxable locally. It can be created by a place or by a person.
Adjusted cost base
The tax cost of property, from which a gain or loss is computed. It resets on arrival in a country and is deemed on emigration.

International school staff tax — what the published fees look like

Teaching staff often arrive with years to bring current, because local withholding at the school looked like the end of the matter while a home-country return was still due. How many of those years are open, and whether an exemption period has quietly lapsed, is what separates one fee from another here.

What working with us on international school staff tax looks like

The reporting penalties get named early

The heaviest exposure on a cross-border file is usually a disclosure form, not the tax. We identify which ones apply before a deadline turns into a penalty.

We say early if it is not our work

If a file needs something this practice does not do, you hear that at the start rather than after a bill.

The quote comes from your documents

Nothing is priced from a phone call. We read what you have first, then the fee is set — so the scope and the number are agreed on the same evidence.

Late and missed years are ordinary work

An unfiled history is not a reason to wait longer. We assess what is still open and what relief the delay attracts before the first return goes in.

How the work runs — quote first, then the work

  • Step 1: Start with a conversation about the facts – Dates, residence, where the income arose. Fifteen minutes is usually enough to know what applies.
  • Step 2: Scope and price, both written down – You get the scope and the fixed fee together, so there is no question later about what was included.
  • Step 3: Prepared by one team, reviewed by a named practitioner – The same people see both sides of the file, and the reviewer signs their name to it.
  • Step 4: Filed, then followed through – Submission is not the end of the engagement — the queries that arrive afterwards are part of it.

A Residency Determination Review After Leaving the Country

Residence is decided on ties, not on a form, and the review asks for evidence of every one of them. The file assembles the ties that were severed and the ones that remained, and answers the questionnaire against the treaty rather than around it.

Options Granted in India and Exercised Elsewhere

Where the grant, the vesting and the exercise happen in different countries, each may claim part of the same gain. Apportioning it across the period worked is what prevents the whole amount being taxed twice.

One Employee in a State Nobody Had Registered In

A single person working from home can create payroll registration, withholding and sometimes an income tax filing for the company in that state. The review measures activity against each state's own threshold.

Case study 4

An Assignment Priced Without Counting the Days

Nearly every relief in a mobility file — treaty exemption, residence, social security — is decided by a day count that has to be evidenced. The engagement puts the tracking in place at the start, because it cannot be reconstructed at the end.

Putting a Foreign Hire on a Canadian Payroll

India does not tax the inheritance itself, but the later sale and the money leaving the country both have positions of their own. The file establishes the cost base to use on that sale and what the remittance will require.

Core International & Cross-Border Tax Services

International Tax Planning & Advisory

Strategy and compliance for income, assets and families spread across borders.

One coordinating team: filings on every side of the border are sequenced so treaty relief and foreign tax credits are claimed once — and in the right country.

U.S. & Cross-Border Tax Returns

Dual filers: U.S. citizens in Canada and Canadians with U.S. income run two parallel systems — we prepare both, in the right order, every year.

Expat & Emigration Tax

The move year is its own project: the elections and valuations filed that year decide the next decade of both countries’ returns.

Non-Resident Canadian Tax

Default withholding is 25% of gross: elective returns routinely turn over-withheld rent and pensions into refunds.

Transfer Pricing & BEPS

Documentation prepared with the return is the cheapest insurance in international tax; reconstructing it during an audit is the most expensive.

Cross-Border Estates & Trusts

Wills drafted for one country routinely misfire in the other — deemed disposition here, estate tax there, credits in between.

Cross-Border Corporate Tax

Expansion raises the same four questions every time — entity, PE, repatriation, payroll. We answer them before the tax authorities do.

India Tax for NRIs & Returning Residents

The deduction is taken on the sale price, not the gain — which is why an NRI property sale strands cash unless the certificate is applied for before closing.

Canadian Tax with a Foreign Element

Residency is decided on facts, not on a form — and the year you arrive or leave is the one where the largest amounts turn on the smallest details.

UAE Tax for Expats & Their Home Country

A zero-tax country is only half the answer — the question that decides the bill is whether the country you came from still treats you as resident.

Holding structures live or die on treaty access, beneficial ownership and substance — the MLI's principal-purpose test now sits over every arrangement.

A holding structure is only as good as its reporting. Foreign affiliates, accrued passive income and distributions each carry their own return, and the penalties on those attach to the form rather than to any tax being owed — so a structure that saves tax can still cost money if the information returns are late.

Tax for international school staff — questions we are asked

What makes international school staff different from an ordinary filing?

School packages are built around benefits rather than salary, and where the employer is a non-profit or a foreign government-linked entity, additional exemption articles may apply that a standard payroll ignores. An ordinary preparer applies the general rule and stops there, which is how the relief in the specific provision goes unclaimed.

Can you work with my existing accountant?

That is how most of these engagements run. They keep the domestic file, we take the cross-border piece, and the boundary is agreed in writing so nothing is done twice or missed.

Do American citizens living abroad have to pay taxes?

American expats and green card holders need to file US returns for life, and many of them pay little or no US tax once the relief is applied — but the filing is what unlocks the relief, so the two questions have different answers. The exclusion for foreign earned income, the credit for foreign tax already paid and the treaty between the two countries between them usually leave the total at roughly the higher of the two countries' tax rather than the sum. Skip the return and none of it applies. See Americans abroad.

What is a double tax treaty and what does it actually do?

It is an agreement between two countries that divides up the right to tax. Article by article it decides which country taxes employment income, dividends, interest, royalties, pensions, property and business profits — and where both may tax, it caps what the source country can withhold and tells the other to give credit. It also breaks residence ties and opens a government-to-government channel for disputes. What it never does is apply itself: a treaty position is claimed. See our treaty work.

Can a large engagement be split into stages?

For multi-year engagements, yes, agreed alongside the scope: each stage gets its own written number, and nothing outside the agreed stages is done without a new quote.

Do you work with businesses as well as individuals?

Both, and frequently the same client in both capacities — a founder's personal position and their company's are separate questions that have to be answered together.
