Individual Cross-Border Tax — published fixed fees

US return from abroad (1040 + 2555/1116)

From $449fixed, before work starts

Covers: The US individual return prepared from abroad, with the exclusion and the foreign tax credit computed together rather than one or the other, plus the account and asset reports that travel with it.

What moves it up: The number of foreign accounts and foreign funds. A salary and one bank account is a straightforward return; six accounts and a portfolio of local mutual funds brings election work and additional reporting.

See this fee page

T1135 foreign property filing

From $349fixed, before work starts

Covers: The Canadian foreign property statement built on cost amount, in Canadian dollars, across everything the test reaches — including holdings people assume are excluded.

What moves it up: Missing acquisition records. The statement is tested on cost, so a holding bought fifteen years ago in another currency has to be reconstructed before it can be reported.

Individual Cross-Border Tax Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Individual Cross-Border Tax cost in Canada?

Individual Cross-Border Tax starts at $From- $349. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you review the deliverable with us before it is filed. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Individual Cross-Border Tax?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the first call to our 24-hour helpline.

How long does Individual Cross-Border Tax take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit support works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months (CRA, 2025 tax year). Interest is what compounds, daily, on top. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Individual Cross-Border Tax?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Individual Cross-Border Tax different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you told it about. It does not ask whether a treaty caps the withholding on that payment, whether the foreign credit was claimed in the right country, whether an information return was due on an account that earned nothing, or whether your related-party pricing is documented. Those are the questions that move the number on a cross-border file.

How do I find out what my filing will cost?

Call the 24-hour helpline, +1 (416) 619-0068. We establish which filings your position actually needs, then send a fixed fee in writing before any work starts — the number does not move once it is agreed.

Are there any hidden fees or setup charges?

No. All our pricing is fixed and transparent. Any additional charges (e.g., for transaction volumes beyond the package limits) are discussed and agreed upon upfront.

Will I have a dedicated accountant?

Yes. A certified tax accountant will be assigned to manage your account and will be available for direct support via email and phone.

Can I avoid capital gains tax on a foreign property?

Not by virtue of it being foreign — there is no exemption for that, and the "keep it offshore" advice you may have read is how people acquire penalties rather than savings. What genuinely reduces the gain is ordinary and legitimate: principal residence relief where the property qualifies and the designation is made correctly, a properly built cost base including acquisition costs and capital improvements, the timing of the disposition, the treaty rules for real property, and credit for the foreign tax paid. See principal residence and foreign property.

What is a permanent establishment, and how easily do we create one?

A taxable presence in another country under the treaty — typically a fixed place of business such as an office, branch, factory or workshop, or a dependent agent habitually concluding contracts on your behalf. Some treaties add a services test measured in days. Purely preparatory or auxiliary activity is excluded, but that carve-out is narrower than it sounds: one senior employee working from home in the other country, with authority, has been enough. See business profits and permanent establishment.

What these engagements turn on

Case study 1

Residency Changed Mid-Year and Both Returns Assumed a Full One

A move part-way through a year produces two part-year positions, not two full ones. The engagement establishes the date residence actually changed, allocates income either side of it, and amends whichever return was filed on the wrong footing.

Case study 2

Deemed Resident or Factual Resident — Not the Same File

The two statuses attract different returns, different credits and different provincial treatment, and the label is decided by facts rather than chosen. Establishing which applies is the work; the filing follows from it without argument.

Case study 3

Coming Back to Canada After Years Abroad

Returning restarts Canadian residence and re-values what you own on the day you arrive. Foreign pensions, employer plans and accounts opened abroad each land differently, and the reporting thresholds are tested against the whole portfolio rather than each account.

Case study 4

One Salary, Two Countries Claiming It

A US citizen resident in Canada, taxed in full on both sides because each return was prepared without the other in view. Deciding which country has the first right to the income, then claiming relief on the second return in the right order, is what stops the same dollar being taxed twice.

Case study 5

A Student or Researcher Covered by a Treaty Article

Several treaties carry a dedicated article for students, trainees and visiting researchers that displaces the ordinary employment rules. Whether it applies turns on the purpose of the stay and the source of the funds, both of which are evidenced rather than asserted.

Case study 6

Leaving Canada — the Bill You Get for Assets You Still Own

Emigrating triggers a deemed disposition of most holdings, which produces tax on gains never realised in cash. The file values the property, identifies what is excluded, and looks at whether security can be posted rather than the tax paid outright.

Case study 7

Inheriting Property in India While Living Abroad

India does not tax the inheritance itself, but the later sale and the money leaving the country both have positions of their own. The file establishes the cost base to use on that sale and what the remittance will require.

Case study 8

Trips That Added Up to a Filing Obligation

Short visits are tracked against a treaty threshold that is measured over a moving window rather than a calendar year. Where the threshold is passed, the obligation reaches back over the whole period.

Core International & Cross-Border Tax Services

International Tax Planning & Advisory

Strategy and compliance for income, assets and families spread across borders.

One coordinating team: filings on every side of the border are sequenced so treaty relief and foreign tax credits are claimed once — and in the right country.

U.S. & Cross-Border Tax Returns

Dual filers: U.S. citizens in Canada and Canadians with U.S. income run two parallel systems — we prepare both, in the right order, every year.

Expat & Emigration Tax

The move year is its own project: the elections and valuations filed that year decide the next decade of both countries’ returns.

Non-Resident Canadian Tax

Default withholding is 25% of gross: elective returns routinely turn over-withheld rent and pensions into refunds.

Transfer Pricing & BEPS

Documentation prepared with the return is the cheapest insurance in international tax; reconstructing it during an audit is the most expensive.

Cross-Border Estates & Trusts

Wills drafted for one country routinely misfire in the other — deemed disposition here, estate tax there, credits in between.

Cross-Border Corporate Tax

Expansion raises the same four questions every time — entity, PE, repatriation, payroll. We answer them before the tax authorities do.

India Tax for NRIs & Returning Residents

The deduction is taken on the sale price, not the gain — which is why an NRI property sale strands cash unless the certificate is applied for before closing.

Canadian Tax with a Foreign Element

Residency is decided on facts, not on a form — and the year you arrive or leave is the one where the largest amounts turn on the smallest details.

UAE Tax for Expats & Their Home Country

A zero-tax country is only half the answer — the question that decides the bill is whether the country you came from still treats you as resident.

Importers, Exporters & Manufacturers

Related-party purchasing, customs value versus transfer price, and foreign-affiliate structures put trading businesses inside the s.247 documentation rules.

Goods crossing a border move the tax question from income to indirect: registration thresholds, place of supply, the customs value and the transfer price between related entities all have to agree with each other. When they do not, the adjustment arrives from two authorities at once and each one uses the other's number.
