In short

Subscription and bit revenue, donations and sponsorships are characterised differently — some as services income, some as gifts, some as royalties — and the platform's country decides the withholding on part of it.

Below: the rule, what clients ask first, two worked files with their numbers, the process end to end, and the published fee.

The rule that applies to this group and not the one next to it

Subscription and bit revenue, donations and sponsorships are characterised differently — some as services income, some as gifts, some as royalties — and the platform's country decides the withholding on part of it.

The rule underneath it looks like this. That is the practical value of a specialist here: not better arithmetic, but knowing which of several possible rules governs twitch & live streamers before the return is built on the wrong one.

Two of the firm’s advisers and the team in the open-plan office

Fixed fees for twitch & live streamers tax, agreed up front

A streaming file is priced on two counts: how many revenue lines have to be characterised, since subscriptions, bits, donations and sponsorship each land differently, and how many platforms or countries have withheld on them. One platform paying into one country is a short piece of work. The fee is fixed in writing first.

All published fees on one page — the complete list of what each engagement costs, stated as figures rather than ranges.

Three things we hear on the first call

  • Donations are not income according to my viewers and income according to my accountant.
  • My subscription revenue comes from a foreign platform with foreign withholding.
  • I stream from abroad for months at a time without telling anyone.

That list is the reason this desk exists. Individually each question has an answer; together they need someone who holds both systems at once. See also China tax for expats — country guide.

Worked through with figures

The same point, with figures rather than adjectives.

Gross withholding against a net-basis return

A non-resident receives C$59,000 in the year. Assume withholding at 20% on the gross amount, and assume deductible costs of C$48,970 against it.

Gross withholding against a net-basis return
ItemAmount
Gross amount receivedC$59,000
Withheld at source (assumed 20% of gross)C$11,800
Deductible costsC$48,970
Net amount actually earnedC$10,030
Tax on the net amount (assumed graduated result)C$3,210
Difference recoverable by filingC$8,590

Filing on a net basis recovers C$8,590 of the C$11,800 withheld. That difference is the entire reason the elective return exists, and it is lost by not filing. The shape of that result holds; the size of it depends entirely on your own numbers and dates.

The figures here are an illustration, not an engagement: amounts are picked so the mechanism is easy to follow, and every rate or threshold is an assumption of the example. Before anything is filed for you, each one is confirmed with the issuing authority for your own tax year.

Worked through with figures

Worked through with figures, the mechanism looks like this.

Credit relief on one stream of income

Take C$157,000 of income taxed in both countries. Assume the other country charged 27% on it and the home country would charge 37% on the same amount.

Credit relief on one stream of income
ItemAmount
Income taxed in both countriesC$157,000
Tax paid abroad (assumed 27%)C$42,390
Home tax on the same income (assumed 37%)C$58,090
Credit available (lesser of the two)C$42,390
Home tax still payableC$15,700

The credit absorbs C$42,390 and leaves C$15,700 payable at home, because the home rate on this income is the higher of the two. The balance is real cash and it is due on the home timetable, which is why instalments get raised in the first meeting. Change any one of those inputs and the answer moves, which is why we run it on your own figures rather than on an illustration.

The figures here are an illustration, not an engagement: amounts are picked so the mechanism is easy to follow, and every rate or threshold is an assumption of the example. Before anything is filed for you, each one is confirmed with the issuing authority for your own tax year.

How we handle it

  1. 1We start with the chronology: dates, countries, and what has already been filed
  2. 2You get the scope and the fee in writing before we touch anything
  3. 3The work is prepared and reviewed by a named person, not a queue
  4. 4Nothing is filed until you have read it
  • Consultations scheduled to your working day rather than ours.
  • Every statutory figure in your file is verified for your own year at source.
  • Documents move through one secure portal, and you can meet us in person at any of our offices.

What to do next

International tax accountant — what this page covers

People reach this page searching for international tax accountant. It is covered here as it applies to cross-border tax for twitch & live streamers — who it applies to, what has to be filed, and what it costs, at a fixed fee agreed before the work starts.

How the engagement runs, phase by phase

  1. Send the documents as they are

No tidying required — forward what you have and we tell you what is missing.

  2. Get a fixed quote in writing

Priced from your actual documents before any work begins, not estimated after.

  3. Both countries prepared together

One team builds the filings against each other so the relief lands exactly once.

  4. Review, then file

You approve the finished work before we file it.

Four terms worth pinning down

GIFT City
India's international financial services centre, operating on a different tax and regulatory basis from the rest of the country.
Foreign affiliate
A non-resident corporation in which a Canadian resident holds a specified level of interest, bringing surplus computations and information reporting with it.
Schedule FA
The foreign asset schedule of the Indian return. There is no value threshold — one foreign account is enough to require disclosure.
Superficial loss
A denied loss where the same or identical property is reacquired within a defined period around the sale by the taxpayer or an affiliated person.

The published fees closest to twitch & live streamers tax

Streaming from abroad for part of the year is the other driver. A stretch spent broadcasting from another country can put a second authority in the picture, and the engagement then has to establish where you were and for how long before a return is prepared. The published fees assume a settled position.

The quote comes from your documents

Nothing is priced from a phone call. We read what you have first, then the fee is set — so the scope and the number are agreed on the same evidence.

A named reviewer on every file

Every page on this site and every file we deliver says which practitioner reviewed it — a person, not a team inbox.

One team, not two firms billing separately

How the work runs — quote first, then the work

  • Step 1: Hand over the paperwork in any state – Sorting it is our job. Send what exists and we identify what is missing from it.
  • Step 2: Priced before a single form is opened – The fee comes from the documents, agreed in writing, and stays where it was agreed.
  • Step 3: One position across every return – The same facts, filed consistently on each side, so nothing contradicts anything else.
  • Step 4: Filed after you have read it – The completed work reaches you before it reaches an authority.

Cross-border tax case studies

Case study 1

Unreported Foreign Income Disclosed Before the CRA Asked

A voluntary disclosure has to be genuinely voluntary — once a letter arrives, the route usually closes. The engagement establishes whether the programme is still available, prepares the years, and puts the relief request in with the filing rather than after it.

Case study 2

A US Citizen Settled in India, Filing on Both Sides

Residence in India and citizenship in the United States produce two annual returns for one income. The order decides the credit, and the Indian financial year and the US calendar year have to be reconciled before either is prepared.

Case study 3

Two Passports, Two Returns, One Income

Dual citizenship does not let you choose which country taxes you. The work is establishing residence, applying the treaty article that governs each income type, and preparing both returns from one set of figures so they agree line for line.

Case study 4

Moving Money Out of India and the Certificates It Needs

A remittance out of India needs its tax position certified before the bank will process it. The file establishes the character of the funds, produces the certification, and keeps the position consistent with the returns already filed.

Case study 5

Social Security Contributions Owed in Two Countries at Once

A totalization agreement assigns contributions to one system and exempts the other, but only against a certificate obtained in advance. Without it both sets come out of the same salary and neither is straightforward to recover.

Case study 6

One Salesperson Abroad, and a Corporate Filing Obligation

A single employee with authority to conclude contracts can create a taxable presence for the whole company. The review tests what the person actually does against the treaty article, and where a presence exists, works out what profit is attributable to it.

Case study 7

A Secondment Whose Paperwork Decided the Tax

Who employs, who directs and who bears the cost are the facts a treaty article turns on, and an assignment letter is where they are recorded. Drafting it with the tax position in view prevents an argument later.

Case study 8

An Assignment Priced Without Counting the Days

Nearly every relief in a mobility file — treaty exemption, residence, social security — is decided by a day count that has to be evidenced. The engagement puts the tracking in place at the start, because it cannot be reconstructed at the end.

Core International & Cross-Border Tax Services

International Tax Planning & Advisory

Strategy and compliance for income, assets and families spread across borders.

One coordinating team: filings on every side of the border are sequenced so treaty relief and foreign tax credits are claimed once — and in the right country.

U.S. & Cross-Border Tax Returns

Dual filers: U.S. citizens in Canada and Canadians with U.S. income run two parallel systems — we prepare both, in the right order, every year.

Expat & Emigration Tax

The move year is its own project: the elections and valuations filed that year decide the next decade of both countries’ returns.

Non-Resident Canadian Tax

Default withholding is 25% of gross: elective returns routinely turn over-withheld rent and pensions into refunds.

Transfer Pricing & BEPS

Documentation prepared with the return is the cheapest insurance in international tax; reconstructing it during an audit is the most expensive.

Cross-Border Estates & Trusts

Wills drafted for one country routinely misfire in the other — deemed disposition here, estate tax there, credits in between.

Cross-Border Corporate Tax

Expansion raises the same four questions every time — entity, PE, repatriation, payroll. We answer them before the tax authorities do.

India Tax for NRIs & Returning Residents

The deduction is taken on the sale price, not the gain — which is why an NRI property sale strands cash unless the certificate is applied for before closing.

Canadian Tax with a Foreign Element

Residency is decided on facts, not on a form — and the year you arrive or leave is the one where the largest amounts turn on the smallest details.

UAE Tax for Expats & Their Home Country

A zero-tax country is only half the answer — the question that decides the bill is whether the country you came from still treats you as resident.

Investment Funds & Holding Companies

Holding structures live or die on treaty access, beneficial ownership and substance — the MLI's principal-purpose test now sits over every arrangement.

A holding structure is only as good as its reporting. Foreign affiliates, accrued passive income and distributions each carry their own return, and the penalties on those attach to the form rather than to any tax being owed — so a structure that saves tax can still cost money if the information returns are late.

Tax for twitch & live streamers — questions we are asked

What makes twitch & live streamers different from an ordinary filing?

Subscription and bit revenue, donations and sponsorships are characterised differently — some as services income, some as gifts, some as royalties — and the platform's country decides the withholding on part of it. An ordinary preparer applies the general rule and stops there, which is how the relief in the specific provision goes unclaimed.

Can you work with my existing accountant?

That is how most of these engagements run. They keep the domestic file, we take the cross-border piece, and the boundary is agreed in writing so nothing is done twice or missed.

How would a foreign tax authority know I am resident there?

Mostly from information you or your bank already provided. Account-opening forms ask you to self-certify tax residence, and that certification is reported between authorities under the Common Reporting Standard or, for US accounts, under the FATCA framework. Beyond that: employer and payroll filings, property registries, immigration records and the tax filings of anyone who paid you. The realistic planning assumption is that the data arrives. See FATCA and information reporting.

How does a remittance actually work, and is it taxed?

A remittance is a transfer of money, not a category of income, and moving your own funds between your own accounts is not what creates tax. What can create tax is the income behind the money and the rules of the country it leaves. India, for instance, collects tax at source when a resident individual remits abroad under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, and requires certification before certain payments leave. The transfer is the trigger for paperwork rather than for tax. See the LRS and tax collected at source.

Do you work with trusts and estates as well as returns?

Yes, and they are frequently the same file: a personal position, an entity position and an estate exposure that all move together.

What happens after the filing?

You get the filed copies and a note of anything due next year, with the dates. Where an authority responds, that correspondence comes to us if the authorisation is in place.
