In short

Equity is usually the largest component of the package, and equity is sourced across the period between grant and vest — so a mid-vesting relocation splits a single gain between two tax systems.

Below: the rule, what clients ask first, two worked files with their numbers, the process end to end, and the published fee.

The rule that applies to this group and not the one next to it

Equity is usually the largest component of the package, and equity is sourced across the period between grant and vest — so a mid-vesting relocation splits a single gain between two tax systems.

This is the point most filings get wrong. That is the practical value of a specialist here: not better arithmetic, but knowing which of several possible rules governs data scientists & ai engineers before the return is built on the wrong one.

What data scientists & ai engineers tax costs here

For data scientists and AI engineers the fee tracks the equity, not the salary: how many grants were vesting when you moved, and how many countries are taxing the period between grant and vest. A single tranche is straightforward; several schedules overlapping a relocation take apportionment. Quoted in writing beforehand.

Three things we hear on the first call

  • I moved countries halfway through my vesting schedule.
  • My restricted units vested after I left and the old country still withheld.
  • My employer's payroll cannot handle two countries and defaults to one.

These are not edge cases. They are what happens when two systems each apply their own logic to one person, and the person is expected to reconcile the result. See also Luxembourg tax for expats — country guide.

The arithmetic, worked through

It is easier to see with numbers attached.

Equity that vests after the move

A grant worth C$103,000 at vest, over a 43-month vesting period, 9 months of which were worked in the first country and 34 in the second.

Equity that vests after the move
ItemAmount
Value at vestC$103,000
Vesting period (months)43
Months worked in the first country9
Months worked in the second country34
Apportioned to the first countryC$21,558
Apportioned to the second countryC$81,442

Two countries tax slices of one gain: C$21,558 and C$81,442 on this apportionment. Where their taxing points differ — grant, vest, exercise or sale — the credit can arrive in a year the other country is no longer taxing, which is the mismatch to plan around. Change any one of those inputs and the answer moves, which is why we run it on your own figures rather than on an illustration.

These amounts illustrate the mechanism only. The rates and thresholds are assumptions of the example, not your numbers: each is checked against the issuing authority for your specific tax year before any return is filed.

The arithmetic, worked through

Worked through with figures, the mechanism looks like this.

Credit relief on one stream of income

Take C$156,000 of income taxed in both countries. Assume the other country charged 29% on it and the home country would charge 43% on the same amount.

Credit relief on one stream of income
ItemAmount
Income taxed in both countriesC$156,000
Tax paid abroad (assumed 29%)C$45,240
Home tax on the same income (assumed 43%)C$67,080
Credit available (lesser of the two)C$45,240
Home tax still payableC$21,840

The credit absorbs C$45,240 and leaves C$21,840 payable at home, because the home rate on this income is the higher of the two. The balance is real cash and it is due on the home timetable, which is why instalments get raised in the first meeting. Your version of this table is the useful one, and it takes a short call and a document pack to produce.

The figures here are an illustration, not an engagement: amounts are picked so the mechanism is easy to follow, and every rate or threshold is an assumption of the example. Before anything is filed for you, each one is confirmed with the issuing authority for your own tax year.

What working with us looks like

  1. 1A first call to map the obligations across every country involved
  2. 2A single fixed fee covering the whole set, agreed before we begin
  3. 3Preparation in the order that makes the relief usable, with a reviewer's sign-off
  4. 4You approve the finished work, and we file it
  • We will tell you when you do not need us, and that call is free.
  • A change of scope is re-quoted before the work, never added to the invoice after it.
  • Consultations scheduled to your working day rather than ours.

What to do next

We would rather scope it properly than quote it quickly.

Four terms worth pinning down

BEPS
Base erosion and profit shifting — the international project whose outputs (country-by-country reporting, the multilateral instrument, the principal-purpose test) now condition treaty access and documentation for multinational groups.
Dual citizenship
Holding two nationalities. It changes nothing for a residence-based system and everything for a citizenship-based one, which is why one passport can create a lifelong filing obligation.
Withholding certificate
An advance determination reducing withholding on a transaction to the tax actually expected — worth many times more applied for before closing than after.
DEMPE
Development, enhancement, maintenance, protection and exploitation — the functions that determine which entity is entitled to an intangible's return, regardless of legal ownership.

Fixed fees around data scientists & ai engineers tax

Paperwork is the other variable. Where grant agreements and vesting statements are to hand, the apportionment is arithmetic; where payroll has withheld everything in one country and the records must be gathered from an employer after the fact, the recovery work is the larger part of the engagement.

A named reviewer on every file

Every page on this site and every file we deliver says which practitioner reviewed it — a person, not a team inbox.

Cross-border is the whole practice

International and cross-border tax is all we do — not a sideline next to domestic work. The edge cases on this page are our ordinary Tuesday.

Filed with the authority, not just prepared

The engagement runs to submission and to the correspondence that follows it, including the queries that arrive months later.

The reporting penalties get named early

The heaviest exposure on a cross-border file is usually a disclosure form, not the tax. We identify which ones apply before a deadline turns into a penalty.

Case study 1

Which Country Taxes the Salary

The employment article turns on where the work is done, who pays, and who bears the cost — three tests that can point in different directions. The file establishes all three before either return is drafted.

Case study 2

Trips That Added Up to a Filing Obligation

Short visits are tracked against a treaty threshold that is measured over a moving window rather than a calendar year. Where the threshold is passed, the obligation reaches back over the whole period.

Case study 3

First Canadian Return After Arriving Mid-Year

The arrival date splits the year and sets the cost base of what you brought with you. Getting that date and those values right is what determines whether a later sale is taxed on the whole gain or only on the part that accrued after landing.

Read how this one runs
Case study 4

A Secondment Whose Paperwork Decided the Tax

Who employs, who directs and who bears the cost are the facts a treaty article turns on, and an assignment letter is where they are recorded. Drafting it with the tax position in view prevents an argument later.

Case study 5

One Salary, Two Countries Claiming It

A US citizen resident in Canada, taxed in full on both sides because each return was prepared without the other in view. Deciding which country has the first right to the income, then claiming relief on the second return in the right order, is what stops the same dollar being taxed twice.

Case study 6

Unreported Foreign Income Disclosed Before the CRA Asked

A voluntary disclosure has to be genuinely voluntary — once a letter arrives, the route usually closes. The engagement establishes whether the programme is still available, prepares the years, and puts the relief request in with the filing rather than after it.

Case study 7

Coming Back to Canada After Years Abroad

Returning restarts Canadian residence and re-values what you own on the day you arrive. Foreign pensions, employer plans and accounts opened abroad each land differently, and the reporting thresholds are tested against the whole portfolio rather than each account.

Case study 8

An Assignment Priced Without Counting the Days

Nearly every relief in a mobility file — treaty exemption, residence, social security — is decided by a day count that has to be evidenced. The engagement puts the tracking in place at the start, because it cannot be reconstructed at the end.

Core International & Cross-Border Tax Services

International Tax Planning & Advisory

Strategy and compliance for income, assets and families spread across borders.

One coordinating team: filings on every side of the border are sequenced so treaty relief and foreign tax credits are claimed once — and in the right country.

U.S. & Cross-Border Tax Returns

Dual filers: U.S. citizens in Canada and Canadians with U.S. income run two parallel systems — we prepare both, in the right order, every year.

Expat & Emigration Tax

The move year is its own project: the elections and valuations filed that year decide the next decade of both countries’ returns.

Non-Resident Canadian Tax

Default withholding is 25% of gross: elective returns routinely turn over-withheld rent and pensions into refunds.

Transfer Pricing & BEPS

Documentation prepared with the return is the cheapest insurance in international tax; reconstructing it during an audit is the most expensive.

Cross-Border Estates & Trusts

Wills drafted for one country routinely misfire in the other — deemed disposition here, estate tax there, credits in between.

Cross-Border Corporate Tax

Expansion raises the same four questions every time — entity, PE, repatriation, payroll. We answer them before the tax authorities do.

India Tax for NRIs & Returning Residents

The deduction is taken on the sale price, not the gain — which is why an NRI property sale strands cash unless the certificate is applied for before closing.

Canadian Tax with a Foreign Element

Residency is decided on facts, not on a form — and the year you arrive or leave is the one where the largest amounts turn on the smallest details.

UAE Tax for Expats & Their Home Country

A zero-tax country is only half the answer — the question that decides the bill is whether the country you came from still treats you as resident.

Performance income is taxed where earned — Regulation 105 in Canada, withholding agreements in the U.S. — with special treaty articles overriding the usual rules.

Performance income is taxed where the performance happens, and the deduction is usually taken at source on the gross fee before expenses. Recovering the difference is a filing exercise in the other country, and it only works if the tour, the residency and the withholding certificates were documented while the work was being done.

Tax for data scientists & ai engineers — questions we are asked

What makes data scientists & ai engineers different from an ordinary filing?

Equity is usually the largest component of the package, and equity is sourced across the period between grant and vest — so a mid-vesting relocation splits a single gain between two tax systems. An ordinary preparer applies the general rule and stops there, which is how the relief in the specific provision goes unclaimed.

Can you work with my existing accountant?

That is how most of these engagements run. They keep the domestic file, we take the cross-border piece, and the boundary is agreed in writing so nothing is done twice or missed.

How does cross-border tax planning work?

It starts with facts rather than structures: which countries have a claim on you, what each one taxes, and where the two overlap. From there the decisions are about order and timing — which country taxes first, where relief is claimed, and whether a filing or a certificate has to be in place before money moves rather than after. Most of the value is in the sequencing, because relief claimed late is usually relief recovered slowly. See international tax planning.

Can an accountant in one country file my return in another?

Yes, where they are authorised to represent you with that tax authority and the filing is done electronically. What matters is not where the adviser sits but whether they can lawfully act for you and are competent in both systems — a return prepared with no knowledge of the other country is where the relief gets missed. We file on both sides, from offices in India, the USA, Canada and the UAE. See how we work.

Can you deal with the tax authority for me?

Yes, once the authorisation is filed. That also lets us see the assessments, slips and instalment records directly, which is usually where the discrepancies turn up.

Do you handle the other country too?

For Canada, the United States and India, yes — that is the whole point of a corridor desk. For a fourth country we coordinate with a local adviser and keep ownership of the interaction between the two systems.
