In short

Frequent trading can convert investment activity into a business, which changes the inclusion rate on gains, the deductibility of losses and expenses, and sometimes the availability of registered-account treatment.

On this page: the rule that applies here, the questions we are asked first, two finished files with their numbers, how an engagement runs, and the fee it starts from.

The rule that applies to this group and not the one next to it

Frequent trading can convert investment activity into a business, which changes the inclusion rate on gains, the deductibility of losses and expenses, and sometimes the availability of registered-account treatment.

Start with the mechanism, not the form. An ordinary preparer will get the general position right and miss the specific one, because the specific one is not on the form. It has to be known about, claimed, and supported.

Fixed fees for day traders your filing calendar, agreed up front

A day trader's calendar is priced by how many years have to be brought onto it at once, because each one has to be rebuilt from the statements as they stood in that year rather than as a broker reports them now. A single current year is the short end.

Three things we hear on the first call

  • My volume is high and I do not know whether I am an investor or a business.
  • My broker is abroad and my account is reportable, which I only just discovered.
  • I moved countries mid-year and my open positions crossed the date.

That list is the reason this desk exists. Individually each question has an answer; together they need someone who holds both systems at once. See also tax for civil & structural engineers.

Worked through with figures

The arithmetic is more persuasive than the description, so:

Gross withholding against a net-basis return

A non-resident receives C$30,000 in the year. Assume withholding at 16% on the gross amount, and assume deductible costs of C$18,300 against it.

Gross withholding against a net-basis return
ItemAmount
Gross amount receivedC$30,000
Withheld at source (assumed 16% of gross)C$4,800
Deductible costsC$18,300
Net amount actually earnedC$11,700
Tax on the net amount (assumed graduated result)C$2,925
Difference recoverable by filingC$1,875

Filing on a net basis recovers C$1,875 of the C$4,800 withheld. That difference is the entire reason the elective return exists, and it is lost by not filing. The shape of that result holds; the size of it depends entirely on your own numbers and dates.

Illustrative figures, not a client engagement: the amounts are chosen to make the mechanism legible, and the rates and thresholds are assumptions stated for the example only. We confirm every one of them against the issuing authority for your own tax year before anything is filed.

Worked through with figures

The arithmetic is more persuasive than the description, so:

Credit relief on one stream of income

Take C$140,000 of income taxed in both countries. Assume the other country charged 29% on it and the home country would charge 40% on the same amount.

Credit relief on one stream of income
ItemAmount
Income taxed in both countriesC$140,000
Tax paid abroad (assumed 29%)C$40,600
Home tax on the same income (assumed 40%)C$56,000
Credit available (lesser of the two)C$40,600
Home tax still payableC$15,400

The credit absorbs C$40,600 and leaves C$15,400 payable at home, because the home rate on this income is the higher of the two. The balance is real cash and it is due on the home timetable, which is why instalments get raised in the first meeting. Change any one of those inputs and the answer moves, which is why we run it on your own figures rather than on an illustration.

The figures here are an illustration, not an engagement: amounts are picked so the mechanism is easy to follow, and every rate or threshold is an assumption of the example. Before anything is filed for you, each one is confirmed with the issuing authority for your own tax year.

How the engagement runs

  1. 1We start with the chronology: dates, countries, and what has already been filed
  2. 2You get the scope and the fee in writing before we touch anything
  3. 3The work is prepared and reviewed by a named person, not a queue
  4. 4Nothing is filed until you have read it
  • 18,000+ clients served across 4 global offices: India, the USA, Canada and the UAE.
  • Fixed fees agreed before any work starts, so the number in the quote is the number on the invoice.
  • Rated 5.0 out of 5 stars on Google, on a profile open for you to read.

Your next step

Ask before the move rather than after it, because most of the useful options expire on the date.

International tax accountant, in practice

People reach this page searching for international tax accountant. It is covered here as it applies to day traders: your filing calendar — who it applies to, what has to be filed, and what it costs, at a fixed fee agreed before the work starts.

How the engagement runs, phase by phase

  1. Send the documents as they are

No tidying required — forward what you have and we tell you what is missing.

  2. Get a fixed quote in writing

Priced from your actual documents before any work begins, not estimated after.

  3. Both countries prepared together

One team builds the filings against each other so the relief lands exactly once.

  4. Review, then file

You approve the finished work before we file it.

Key terms behind this page, defined

Treaty override
Domestic legislation that displaces a treaty provision. Where it exists, the treaty text alone does not settle the position.
Exempt surplus
A pool of a foreign affiliate's active business earnings from a treaty or agreement country, dividends from which can generally reach Canada without further Canadian tax.
Shadow payroll
A host-country payroll that pays nobody, existing so the host receives the withholding and reporting due on compensation paid elsewhere.
Juridical double taxation
The same person taxed on the same income by two states. This is what treaties are designed to relieve.

Day traders your filing calendar — what the published fees look like

A year already late is not the same job as a year merely due. Where a deadline has gone by, the route back in has to be chosen and the filing built to suit it, and that, rather than the trading volume behind it, is what moves the figure in the second band.

Why clients bring day traders your filing calendar to us

The order of filing is planned, not improvised

Which return goes first decides whether relief can be claimed at all. That sequence is worked out before anything is submitted.

The fee is fixed before we start

Quoted from your documents and agreed in writing. The number you accept is the number you pay.

Every figure on a page is traceable

Where a rate or a threshold appears in our writing it names the tax year it belongs to. Where it could not be confirmed, the page describes the mechanism and quotes no number.

Filed with the authority, not just prepared

The engagement runs to submission and to the correspondence that follows it, including the queries that arrive months later.

Wintering in the US Long Enough to Become a US Filer

Case study 3

Unreported Foreign Income Disclosed Before the CRA Asked

A voluntary disclosure has to be genuinely voluntary — once a letter arrives, the route usually closes. The engagement establishes whether the programme is still available, prepares the years, and puts the relief request in with the filing rather than after it.

The Year of Leaving India

A Retirement Plan That Grows Tax-Deferred in Only One Country

Cross-border retirement accounts are recognised by treaty, but the deferral usually has to be elected rather than assumed. The engagement checks whether the election was made, makes it where it was missed, and reports the account on whichever side requires it.

An IRS Notice for a Year the Client Believed Was Settled

Most notices are proposals rather than assessments, and they carry a response window that is shorter than it looks. The engagement reads what is actually being proposed, gathers the support, and replies inside the window with the position rather than a request for time.

Canadian Pension Paid Abroad and Taxed at the Flat Rate

Pension and annuity payments to a non-resident carry a flat withholding that often exceeds what a return would produce. The alternative filing is elective, and whether it helps depends on the total income for the year rather than on the payment alone.

Core International & Cross-Border Tax Services

International Tax Planning & Advisory

Strategy and compliance for income, assets and families spread across borders.

One coordinating team: filings on every side of the border are sequenced so treaty relief and foreign tax credits are claimed once — and in the right country.

U.S. & Cross-Border Tax Returns

Dual filers: U.S. citizens in Canada and Canadians with U.S. income run two parallel systems — we prepare both, in the right order, every year.

Expat & Emigration Tax

The move year is its own project: the elections and valuations filed that year decide the next decade of both countries’ returns.

Non-Resident Canadian Tax

Default withholding is 25% of gross: elective returns routinely turn over-withheld rent and pensions into refunds.

Transfer Pricing & BEPS

Documentation prepared with the return is the cheapest insurance in international tax; reconstructing it during an audit is the most expensive.

Cross-Border Estates & Trusts

Wills drafted for one country routinely misfire in the other — deemed disposition here, estate tax there, credits in between.

Cross-Border Corporate Tax

Expansion raises the same four questions every time — entity, PE, repatriation, payroll. We answer them before the tax authorities do.

India Tax for NRIs & Returning Residents

The deduction is taken on the sale price, not the gain — which is why an NRI property sale strands cash unless the certificate is applied for before closing.

Canadian Tax with a Foreign Element

Residency is decided on facts, not on a form — and the year you arrive or leave is the one where the largest amounts turn on the smallest details.

UAE Tax for Expats & Their Home Country

A zero-tax country is only half the answer — the question that decides the bill is whether the country you came from still treats you as resident.

Investment Funds & Holding Companies

Holding structures live or die on treaty access, beneficial ownership and substance — the MLI's principal-purpose test now sits over every arrangement.

A holding structure is only as good as its reporting. Foreign affiliates, accrued passive income and distributions each carry their own return, and the penalties on those attach to the form rather than to any tax being owed — so a structure that saves tax can still cost money if the information returns are late.

Day traders — your filing calendar — questions we are asked

What makes day traders different from an ordinary filing?

Frequent trading can convert investment activity into a business, which changes the inclusion rate on gains, the deductibility of losses and expenses, and sometimes the availability of registered-account treatment. An ordinary preparer applies the general rule and stops there, which is how the relief in the specific provision goes unclaimed.

Can you work with my existing accountant?

That is how most of these engagements run. They keep the domestic file, we take the cross-border piece, and the boundary is agreed in writing so nothing is done twice or missed.

Which countries have a tax treaty with the United States?

Around sixty, including Canada, the United Kingdom, India, Australia and most of western Europe — but the list matters less than the terms, because each treaty caps rates and allocates income differently. Two countries with treaties can produce opposite answers on the same pension or the same royalty. What decides your position is the specific article covering your income type. See our country guides.

What is cross-border tax?

Cross-border tax is what applies when income, assets or people touch more than one tax system at once — someone living in one country and earning in another, a company selling or hiring abroad, a family holding property in a second country. The work is rarely one country's rules applied harder; it is reconciling two sets of rules and claiming the relief that stops the same income being taxed twice at full rates. See what we do.

How do you handle my documents?

Through an access-controlled portal rather than email attachments, with retention limits. Tax records are the most sensitive papers most people own and they are treated that way.

Will this trigger an audit?

Filing correctly does not create risk; a pattern of missing filings does. Where a disclosure route is involved we set out what the authority will see and in what order before you commit to it.
