In short

Platform income is paid from wherever the platform is established, brand deals are services income sourced where the work is done, and gifted product is taxable in most systems — three regimes in one income statement.

Further down: the governing rule, the first-call questions, two completed files with figures, the way the work runs, and where the fee is published.

The rule that applies to this group and not the one next to it

Platform income is paid from wherever the platform is established, brand deals are services income sourced where the work is done, and gifted product is taxable in most systems — three regimes in one income statement.

This is the point most filings get wrong. The general rules are the same for everyone; the provision that changes the answer is not. That is why a general adviser applies the default and stops, and why the relief written for this group goes unclaimed year after year.

Fixed fees for influencers & content creators your filing calendar, agreed up front

A filing calendar for an influencer or content creator is priced on how many returns it has to carry through the year and in how many countries — platform payouts in one, residence filing in another, instalments in between. A calendar that is already current costs less to keep than one being brought back into line.

Three things we hear on the first call

  • My platform pays me from another country and reports nothing where I live.
  • Brand deals, affiliate income and gifted product are all treated differently.
  • I moved countries and my platform account still has the old tax details.

Every one of those is a question we answer weekly. They arise because two tax systems were written independently and neither was designed with the other in mind. See also 183-day rules in practice.

The numbers, end to end

Numbers make this concrete, so here is the same rule applied to a set of figures.

Gross withholding against a net-basis return

A non-resident receives C$56,000 in the year. Assume withholding at 28% on the gross amount, and assume deductible costs of C$47,040 against it.

Gross withholding against a net-basis return
ItemAmount
Gross amount receivedC$56,000
Withheld at source (assumed 28% of gross)C$15,680
Deductible costsC$47,040
Net amount actually earnedC$8,960
Tax on the net amount (assumed graduated result)C$2,957
Difference recoverable by filingC$12,723

Filing on a net basis recovers C$12,723 of the C$15,680 withheld. That difference is the entire reason the elective return exists, and it is lost by not filing. Change any one of those inputs and the answer moves, which is why we run it on your own figures rather than on an illustration.

Treat these numbers as a worked example rather than advice — they exist to make the mechanics visible, and the rates and thresholds are assumed for the illustration. For a real filing, we verify each figure with the authority that publishes it, for your year.

A worked example

The same point, with figures rather than adjectives.

Credit relief on one stream of income

Take C$102,000 of income taxed in both countries. Assume the other country charged 31% on it and the home country would charge 26% on the same amount.

Credit relief on one stream of income
ItemAmount
Income taxed in both countriesC$102,000
Tax paid abroad (assumed 31%)C$31,620
Home tax on the same income (assumed 26%)C$26,520
Credit available (lesser of the two)C$26,520
Home tax still payableC$0

The credit fully absorbs the home liability on this income, so nothing further is payable at home — but the return still has to be filed and the credit still has to be claimed, by category and by country. Your version of this table is the useful one, and it takes a short call and a document pack to produce.

Illustrative figures, not a client engagement: the amounts are chosen to make the mechanism legible, and the rates and thresholds are assumptions stated for the example only. We confirm every one of them against the issuing authority for your own tax year before anything is filed.

From first call to filed

  1. 1A short call to work out what actually applies to you and what does not
  2. 2A written quote against a defined scope, with nothing billed by the hour
  3. 3We prepare, a named reviewer checks it, and you see it before it goes
  4. 4You approve, we file, and only then do you pay
  • Documents move through one secure portal, and you can meet us in person at any of our offices.
  • We will tell you when you do not need us, and that call is free.
  • Nothing is filed until you have read it.

How to get this moving

One call now is worth more than a filing season of guessing.

Checked and signed off for the 2025 and 2026 filing seasons by Udit Gupta, Cross-Border Tax Expert, Legal Quotient Consultants. Written as general guidance, not as a recommendation for your situation. Talk it through with us before acting on it.

Where international tax accountant comes into this file

This is the page to read on international tax accountant. It takes influencers & content creators: your filing calendar in order — the test that decides who is affected, the returns and forms that follow from it, and a fee quoted in writing before anything starts.

From first contact to filed return

  1. Documents first, questions second

We read the file before asking anything, so the questions we do ask are the ones that matter.

  2. A quote you can hold us to

Fixed in writing against a defined scope. No hourly meter, and no revision after the fact.

  3. The order of filing decided deliberately

Which return goes first can decide whether relief is available at all. That is planned, not discovered.

  4. Nothing filed without your sign-off

You see the completed work, ask what you need to, and approve it before submission.

Key terms behind this page, defined

Beneficial ownership
The test that a treaty rate belongs to the person entitled to use and enjoy the income, not to an intermediary obliged to pass it on.
T1135
Canada's foreign income verification statement, reporting specified foreign property. It is tested on cost amount rather than market value, in aggregate.
Graduated rate estate
An estate that qualifies for graduated rates for a limited period after death, subject to conditions met from the first return onwards.
Advance pricing arrangement
An agreement with one or both tax authorities fixing the transfer-pricing method for future years, and in some countries for past ones by rollback.

The published fees closest to influencers & content creators your filing calendar

The second driver is how settled the year is. A creator who moved countries mid-year, changed the tax details on a platform account, or picked up sales-tax registration on brand work has a calendar that must be rebuilt rather than repeated, and the fee is agreed in writing before that starts.

The difference a dedicated cross-border team makes

The reporting penalties get named early

The heaviest exposure on a cross-border file is usually a disclosure form, not the tax. We identify which ones apply before a deadline turns into a penalty.

Late and missed years are ordinary work

An unfiled history is not a reason to wait longer. We assess what is still open and what relief the delay attracts before the first return goes in.

Filed with the authority, not just prepared

The engagement runs to submission and to the correspondence that follows it, including the queries that arrive months later.

Every figure on a page is traceable

Where a rate or a threshold appears in our writing it names the tax year it belongs to. Where it could not be confirmed, the page describes the mechanism and quotes no number.

The engagement, start to finish

  • Step 1: Start with a conversation about the facts – Dates, residence, where the income arose. Fifteen minutes is usually enough to know what applies.
  • Step 2: Scope and price, both written down – You get the scope and the fixed fee together, so there is no question later about what was included.
  • Step 3: Prepared by one team, reviewed by a named practitioner – The same people see both sides of the file, and the reviewer signs their name to it.
  • Step 4: Filed, then followed through – Submission is not the end of the engagement — the queries that arrive afterwards are part of it.

Cross-border situations we are engaged for

Case study 1

Moving Money Out of India and the Certificates It Needs

A remittance out of India needs its tax position certified before the bank will process it. The file establishes the character of the funds, produces the certification, and keeps the position consistent with the returns already filed.

Read how this one runs
Case study 2

The Two-Year Window After Returning to India

Returning residents pass through a transitional status in which foreign income is largely outside the Indian net. The engagement establishes when the window opens and closes, and puts the transactions that benefit inside it.

Read how this one runs
Case study 3

A Residency Determination Review After Leaving the Country

Residence is decided on ties, not on a form, and the review asks for evidence of every one of them. The file assembles the ties that were severed and the ones that remained, and answers the questionnaire against the treaty rather than around it.

Read how this one runs
Case study 4

Whether the Year Made Someone an NRI

Indian residence is decided by presence tests applied to the financial year, and a single trip can change the answer for the whole of it. The status is established before any return or exemption is considered.

Read how this one runs
Case study 5

A TFSA That Costs More Than It Saves

Canadian tax-free accounts are not tax-free to a US person, and some of them carry a reporting form of their own. The file is a review of what is held, what each account triggers on the US side, and whether the account is worth keeping once the reporting is priced in.

Read how this one runs
Case study 6

Inheriting Property in India While Living Abroad

India does not tax the inheritance itself, but the later sale and the money leaving the country both have positions of their own. The file establishes the cost base to use on that sale and what the remittance will require.

Case study 7

Unreported Foreign Income Disclosed Before the CRA Asked

A voluntary disclosure has to be genuinely voluntary — once a letter arrives, the route usually closes. The engagement establishes whether the programme is still available, prepares the years, and puts the relief request in with the filing rather than after it.

Read how this one runs
Case study 8

An Assignment Priced on an Equalisation Promise

A policy that leaves the assignee no better or worse off has to be computed, not just stated, and the hypothetical deduction runs alongside the real one. The engagement builds both and reconciles them at year end.

Core International & Cross-Border Tax Services

International Tax Planning & Advisory

Strategy and compliance for income, assets and families spread across borders.

One coordinating team: filings on every side of the border are sequenced so treaty relief and foreign tax credits are claimed once — and in the right country.

U.S. & Cross-Border Tax Returns

Dual filers: U.S. citizens in Canada and Canadians with U.S. income run two parallel systems — we prepare both, in the right order, every year.

Expat & Emigration Tax

The move year is its own project: the elections and valuations filed that year decide the next decade of both countries’ returns.

Non-Resident Canadian Tax

Default withholding is 25% of gross: elective returns routinely turn over-withheld rent and pensions into refunds.

Transfer Pricing & BEPS

Documentation prepared with the return is the cheapest insurance in international tax; reconstructing it during an audit is the most expensive.

Cross-Border Estates & Trusts

Wills drafted for one country routinely misfire in the other — deemed disposition here, estate tax there, credits in between.

Cross-Border Corporate Tax

Expansion raises the same four questions every time — entity, PE, repatriation, payroll. We answer them before the tax authorities do.

India Tax for NRIs & Returning Residents

The deduction is taken on the sale price, not the gain — which is why an NRI property sale strands cash unless the certificate is applied for before closing.

Canadian Tax with a Foreign Element

Residency is decided on facts, not on a form — and the year you arrive or leave is the one where the largest amounts turn on the smallest details.

UAE Tax for Expats & Their Home Country

A zero-tax country is only half the answer — the question that decides the bill is whether the country you came from still treats you as resident.

Investment Funds & Holding Companies

Holding structures live or die on treaty access, beneficial ownership and substance — the MLI's principal-purpose test now sits over every arrangement.

A holding structure is only as good as its reporting. Foreign affiliates, accrued passive income and distributions each carry their own return, and the penalties on those attach to the form rather than to any tax being owed — so a structure that saves tax can still cost money if the information returns are late.

Influencers & content creators — your filing calendar — questions we are asked

What makes influencers & content creators different from an ordinary filing?

Platform income is paid from wherever the platform is established, brand deals are services income sourced where the work is done, and gifted product is taxable in most systems — three regimes in one income statement. An ordinary preparer applies the general rule and stops there, which is how the relief in the specific provision goes unclaimed.

Can you work with my existing accountant?

That is how most of these engagements run. They keep the domestic file, we take the cross-border piece, and the boundary is agreed in writing so nothing is done twice or missed.

Is moving money between my own accounts in two countries taxable?

Moving your own capital between your own accounts is not itself income, so the transfer is not what creates tax. What can create tax or reporting is the income the money earned before it moved, a foreign-exchange gain on certain holdings, and the reporting obligations the balances themselves trigger — foreign account and asset reports keyed to balances rather than income. Remittances out of some countries also need certification before the bank will send them. See foreign account reporting.

I work remotely from another country for a company back home — who taxes me?

Usually the country you are physically in, because employment income is generally sourced where the work is done, with your residence country taxing it as well if you are resident there and giving credit. Three things follow: your employer may acquire withholding and social security obligations where you sit, a treaty tie-breaker may be needed if both countries call you resident, and a short trip that becomes a long stay can cross a residence threshold nobody was watching. See remote workers and digital nomads.

Who reviews the work?

A named reviewer signs off every statutory filing, and their name and the review date appear on the advice you receive.

When do I pay?

After the work is finished and you have approved it. You see the completed return or filing before any payment is made.

No hourly billing, ever
