In short

A dental practice is a business with premises and equipment, so relocating means an actual disposition or restructuring of the practice rather than simply changing an address on a return.

Further down: the governing rule, the first-call questions, two completed files with figures, the way the work runs, and where the fee is published.

The rule that applies to this group and not the one next to it

A dental practice is a business with premises and equipment, so relocating means an actual disposition or restructuring of the practice rather than simply changing an address on a return.

One question decides the rest of the file. The general rules are the same for everyone; the provision that changes the answer is not. That is why a general adviser applies the default and stops, and why the relief written for this group goes unclaimed year after year.

Transparent, fixed pricing for dentists tax

For a dentist the fee turns on what happens to the practice, not on the move itself. A year in which the practice is sold or restructured carries a disposition to compute, and where the equipment and goodwill have never been valued that work has to be built rather than refreshed. Quoted in writing first.

Three things we hear on the first call

  • I am selling my practice and moving abroad in the same year.
  • My associate arrangement is treated as employment in one country and self-employment in the other.
  • The equipment and goodwill valuations for the move have never been done.

Every one of those is a question we answer weekly. They arise because two tax systems were written independently and neither was designed with the other in mind. See also tanzania tax for expats — country guide.

The numbers, end to end

The arithmetic is more persuasive than the description, so:

Splitting one salary between two countries

A salary of C$257,000 for a year with 220 working days, 112 of them performed in the other country. Employment income is generally sourced to where the work was physically done.

Splitting one salary between two countries
ItemAmount
Annual salaryC$257,000
Working days in the year220
Days worked in the other country112
Days worked at home108
Income sourced to the other countryC$130,836
Income sourced at homeC$126,164

C$130,836 is sourced abroad on this split, which is the figure the host country taxes and the figure the home credit is computed on. Reproduce this from a travel record, not from memory — it is the first thing an auditor asks for. Change any one of those inputs and the answer moves, which is why we run it on your own figures rather than on an illustration.

Example figures throughout, selected to make the rule visible, with rates and thresholds assumed for the demonstration. Your actual filing uses figures confirmed with the issuing authority for your tax year.

The arithmetic, worked through

This is what the rule produces when you put figures through it.

Credit relief on one stream of income

Take C$124,000 of income taxed in both countries. Assume the other country charged 27% on it and the home country would charge 32% on the same amount.

Credit relief on one stream of income
ItemAmount
Income taxed in both countriesC$124,000
Tax paid abroad (assumed 27%)C$33,480
Home tax on the same income (assumed 32%)C$39,680
Credit available (lesser of the two)C$33,480
Home tax still payableC$6,200

The credit absorbs C$33,480 and leaves C$6,200 payable at home, because the home rate on this income is the higher of the two. The balance is real cash and it is due on the home timetable, which is why instalments get raised in the first meeting. That is an illustration of the mechanism, not a prediction about your file — the same computation on your figures is the first thing we do.

The figures here are an illustration, not an engagement: amounts are picked so the mechanism is easy to follow, and every rate or threshold is an assumption of the example. Before anything is filed for you, each one is confirmed with the issuing authority for your own tax year.

How we handle it

  1. 1A call to the 24-hour helpline to find out whether this is a filing or a project
  2. 2A fixed fee for a written scope — re-quoted if the scope changes, never invoiced silently
  3. 3Preparation against the evidence, with the positions documented as we go
  4. 4Your approval, then the filing — in that order
  • A named reviewer signs off every statutory filing.
  • Consultations scheduled to your working day rather than ours.
  • A change of scope is re-quoted before the work, never added to the invoice after it.

Where to go from here

The first call establishes whether there is work to do. Everything after that is quoted.

International tax accountant, in practice

Read this page for international tax accountant. It works through cross-border tax for dentists from the beginning — whether it applies to you at all, what has to be filed if it does, and what the engagement costs, priced up front.

The four phases of the work

  1. Share your documents

A secure upload link arrives after the first call — send files in any state.

  2. A written fixed fee

The quote is fixed from what you send; it does not move once accepted.

  3. Preparation, both sides at once

The returns are drafted together, reconciled line against line.

  4. Approve, then file

Nothing is filed until you have seen it and approved it.

The vocabulary this page leans on

Foreign housing exclusion
An additional US exclusion for housing costs abroad above a base amount, available alongside the earned income exclusion and computed by reference to it.
Treaty shopping
Routing income through a third country to access a treaty rate. Anti-abuse tests are written specifically to identify and deny it.
QEF election
An election to treat a foreign pooled investment as a qualified electing fund, taxing its income currently instead of under the default throwback regime.
Service PE
A permanent establishment created by furnishing services in a country for a period. Several treaties, India's among them, apply this test at a low threshold.

Fixed fees around dentists tax

The published fees below are for single pieces of work. What moves a dental file between them is the associate arrangement: treated as employment on one side of the border and self-employment on the other, it turns a single income into two characterisations, each needing its own schedule and its own supporting record.

What working with us on dentists tax looks like

Filed with the authority, not just prepared

The engagement runs to submission and to the correspondence that follows it, including the queries that arrive months later.

The reporting penalties get named early

The heaviest exposure on a cross-border file is usually a disclosure form, not the tax. We identify which ones apply before a deadline turns into a penalty.

The fee is fixed before we start

Quoted from your documents and agreed in writing. The number you accept is the number you pay.

We say early if it is not our work

If a file needs something this practice does not do, you hear that at the start rather than after a bill.

Case study 1

Indian Rent Collected While Resident Somewhere Else

Rent from Indian property is taxed in India and again where you live, with relief on one side only. The file gets the Indian deduction right first, then claims the credit on the home return against what was actually paid.

Case study 2

Residency Changed Mid-Year and Both Returns Assumed a Full One

A move part-way through a year produces two part-year positions, not two full ones. The engagement establishes the date residence actually changed, allocates income either side of it, and amends whichever return was filed on the wrong footing.

Case study 3

A Student or Researcher Covered by a Treaty Article

Several treaties carry a dedicated article for students, trainees and visiting researchers that displaces the ordinary employment rules. Whether it applies turns on the purpose of the stay and the source of the funds, both of which are evidenced rather than asserted.

Case study 4

A Second Opinion on a Return Already Filed

A cross-border return prepared on one side only is usually right in isolation and wrong in combination. The review checks residence, source and relief in that order, and says plainly whether an amendment is worth making.

A TFSA That Costs More Than It Saves

Canadian tax-free accounts are not tax-free to a US person, and some of them carry a reporting form of their own. The file is a review of what is held, what each account triggers on the US side, and whether the account is worth keeping once the reporting is priced in.

Coming Back to Canada After Years Abroad

Returning restarts Canadian residence and re-values what you own on the day you arrive. Foreign pensions, employer plans and accounts opened abroad each land differently, and the reporting thresholds are tested against the whole portfolio rather than each account.

Core International & Cross-Border Tax Services

International Tax Planning & Advisory

Strategy and compliance for income, assets and families spread across borders.

One coordinating team: filings on every side of the border are sequenced so treaty relief and foreign tax credits are claimed once — and in the right country.

U.S. & Cross-Border Tax Returns

Dual filers: U.S. citizens in Canada and Canadians with U.S. income run two parallel systems — we prepare both, in the right order, every year.

Expat & Emigration Tax

The move year is its own project: the elections and valuations filed that year decide the next decade of both countries’ returns.

Non-Resident Canadian Tax

Default withholding is 25% of gross: elective returns routinely turn over-withheld rent and pensions into refunds.

Transfer Pricing & BEPS

Documentation prepared with the return is the cheapest insurance in international tax; reconstructing it during an audit is the most expensive.

Cross-Border Estates & Trusts

Wills drafted for one country routinely misfire in the other — deemed disposition here, estate tax there, credits in between.

Cross-Border Corporate Tax

Expansion raises the same four questions every time — entity, PE, repatriation, payroll. We answer them before the tax authorities do.

India Tax for NRIs & Returning Residents

The deduction is taken on the sale price, not the gain — which is why an NRI property sale strands cash unless the certificate is applied for before closing.

Canadian Tax with a Foreign Element

Residency is decided on facts, not on a form — and the year you arrive or leave is the one where the largest amounts turn on the smallest details.

UAE Tax for Expats & Their Home Country

A zero-tax country is only half the answer — the question that decides the bill is whether the country you came from still treats you as resident.

Software revenue crosses borders by default — sourcing rules, withholding on licence-like payments and IP location decide the effective rate.

Software revenue is rarely taxed where the team sits. Licence, subscription and service income are characterised differently by each side, and the answer decides withholding at source, treaty relief and whether a foreign customer creates a taxable presence at all — questions that are cheap to settle before the contract and expensive afterwards.

Tax for dentists — questions we are asked

What makes dentists different from an ordinary filing?

A dental practice is a business with premises and equipment, so relocating means an actual disposition or restructuring of the practice rather than simply changing an address on a return. An ordinary preparer applies the general rule and stops there, which is how the relief in the specific provision goes unclaimed.

Can you work with my existing accountant?

That is how most of these engagements run. They keep the domestic file, we take the cross-border piece, and the boundary is agreed in writing so nothing is done twice or missed.

What is double taxation?

Double taxation means the same income being taxed by two authorities. It comes in two forms: juridical, where two countries each tax one person on one amount, and economic, where two different people are taxed on the same underlying profit — a company on its earnings and a shareholder on the dividend paid out of them. Relief comes from a treaty, a foreign tax credit, or an exemption, and which one applies depends on the income type. How to avoid double taxation sets out the routes.

How do families with assets in two countries handle inheritance?

With paperwork built for both systems rather than one. In practice that means wills that work where each asset actually sits, an executor with authority a foreign bank or land registry will accept, clearance certificates before the estate distributes so the executor is not left personally exposed, and an estate tax exposure calculation done while the person is alive and can still act on it. Doing it afterwards costs more and forecloses most of the options. See cross-border wills and trusts.

Do you keep my documents?

For the retention period the professional rules require, in the same access-controlled system, and no longer than that.

Why is cross-border work more expensive than a domestic return?

Because two systems have to be reconciled rather than one applied, and the reconciliation is where the money is saved. The fee is still fixed and agreed before we start.
